The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin. The dermis is the next layer under the epidermis. Both layers help to protect the body.

The top layer of the epidermis is called the stratum corneum. Flat skin cells that shed about every 2 weeks
The bottom layer is called the stratum basale. They layer divides the cells and push already formed cells into higher alyers.

The 2 main layers of the skin are the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis protects the body from water loss. The dermis gives the skin cells nutrients.
