Presentations

You and your classmates have created bone presentations on different disorders/diseases. You need to give feed back on three of these presentations. Give specific information and not just a good job.

Osteoporosis: bones weaken, bone density gets thinner, easy to break. Happens when you get older around menopause, a lot of causes, happens if you smoke or drink a lot, or have a small body size, or eating disorder. There are medical treatments, like pills to help you deal with it. Not really a cure, but you can prevent it.
Pagets disease: only affect a few bones around it, caused by bone tissue breaking down, chronic disease that results in misshapen bones, more common in older people. It is unknown what causes it. Symptoms will get worse slowly, early detection will help with treatment, can find out with x-rays.
Leukemia: a cancer of the bone or the bone marrow, increase of white blood cells. There are different types. There are different causes for each type of leukemia. It results from a combination of somatic mutations in DNA and the environment. Symptoms include bleeding, weakness, and bruising. Treatment is usually chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and also surgery.

Dwarfism: also called hormone growth deficiency, characterized by body parts being small in comparison with a regular sized person, treatment would continue through adulthood, live as long as any other regular sized person, prefered to be called little people, is not a disease
Fibro Dysplasia: bone disease that destroys normal bone, replaces with fibrous bone tissue, can affect more than one bone at a time, no known cause, some symptoms include bone pain, bone sores, unusual skin color, no way to prevent it
Leukemia: cancer of the bone or bone marrow, causes include previous cancer patients, genetic diseases, and certain blood disorders, symptoms include fatigue, abnormal bleeding, and excessive bruising, treatment can be chemotherapy, most cases occur in older people, every four minutes a person is diagnosed with blood cancer

Scoliosis: a curving of the spine away from the middle or sideways. ITs most common for children over 10 years old and its is hereditary. 3 different causes of scoliosis; congenital scoliosis, neuromuscular scoliosis and idiopathic scolosis. There are many different types of symptoms like; fatigue, backache or lower back pain, spine curves to the side and shoulders or hips appear unequal. Treatment includes wearing a brace that will make the posture of your back better.
Achondrogenesis: It a group of severe disorders that affect cartilage and bone development. Symptoms include; very short truck, arms, legs, and neck, head appears large in relation to the trunk. There are also 3 types of Achondrogenesis, they are; type 1A (houston-Harris), Type 1B (Parenti- Fraccaro), and Type 2. This type of bone disease is hereditary. There is no current therapy for Achondrogenesis as of right now, but there are some tests that can be done which is done during the 1st ecamination of an infant.
Leukemia: a cancer of the bone or the bone marrow. There are a couple different types of leukemia and with each different one there is a different cause. Some symptoms would include bleeding, weakness and bruising. And there is some treatment for those who seek it like; chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery.

Dwarfism is chracterized by body parts being smaller compared to the stature of other humans. It is also called hormone deficiency. 1 in every 40,000 people has dwarfism. Dwarfism is not a disease and people with dwarfism live just as long as people without it. It can also be caused by 200 distinct medical conditions.

Scoliosis is the curvature of the spine away from the midline. It is more commonly found in women than men and is usually found in children after the age of 10. Some of the symptoms include lower back pain, fatigue, shoulders or hips are unequal, and also if you notice your spine curving to a sidee. Scoliosis screenings are being done in high schools, otherwise you usually might not notice a difference at all.

Fibro Dysplasia is a bone disease that destroys normal bone and replaces it with fibrous bone tissue. There is no known cause and no treatment, but it usually occurs in kids between the ages of 3-15. It is not hereditary. Some of the symptoms include bone pain, bone sores, difficulty walking, fractures or bone deformities, and unusual skin color.

Achondrogenesis: This is a hereditary disorder that affect how your bones and cartilage develop. It has a very poor prognosis and most infants die before birth or live for a shrot period of time and then die because of respiratory failure because of their extremely small chests. Type 1A and 1B are recessive while Type 2 is dominant.

Scoliosis: This is a hereditary disease which is more commonly found in girls than in boys. It is the curving of the spine incorrectly/away from the middle. There are three different types/causes of scoliosis. One treatment of scoliosis is using braces for the back, but this only works for Idiopathic Scoliosis. Surgery is another treatment option usually used in severe cases.

Leukemia: This is basically bone cancer or bone marrow cancer. It results in an increase in white blood cells. There are different types of Leukemia and each has unique causes. Usually this disease causes weakness, fatigue, weight loss, and many other symptoms. Also, it is more often found in men than in women.

Osteoporosis is when the bone density gets thinner, making it easier to break. It is more common in women and happens around the time of menopause. It happens in women over 50 and men over 70. Some things that can cause it is if you smoke, drink, have a small body size, rhemotoid arthritis, or an eating disorder. Why does it happen? Because the body will take calcium from bones if it’s not getting enough. For treatment, there are pills for the pain. There is no cure, though. To help prevent it you can quit unhealthy habits and regularly test your bone density to watch out for it.
Feeback: nice presentation. well done, well done.

Dwarfism is a genetic disorder that is characterized by smaller body parts than normal and short stature. It is caused from a random genetic mutation or by many different medical conditions. It can cause breathing problems, or problems with walking and talking. The most effective treatment is replacing hormones. It is risky, but they can also have limb-lengthening surgery. The usual height of a dwarf is 2 feet, 8 inches. An interesting fact is that it is not a disease, and not all types of dwarfism are present at birth.
Feedback:very nice.. love the picture!

Achondrogenesis is a group of severe disorders that effect cartilage and bone development. It can cause a small body and short limbs. Babies usually do not live long with it, or are a stillborn because of respiratory failure. Achondrogenesis is inherited from their parents genes. One type occurs 1 in about 50,000 newborns. There is no therapy for it, and X-rays show it in babies. The outcome of the disease is very poor, when usually the babies die while still in the womb.
Feedback: nice powerpoint :)
