Ethanol

The news now is that grass makes better ethanol than corn. What is going to happen to all of the ethanol plants in South Dakota that were made to convert corn into ethanol and are not able to do this with grass? Will this in the long run harm the economy of South Dakota?

I think that all of the plants that convert corn to ethanol will be unable to run anymore. That will hurt our economy becuase we will lose money over the issue. Using grass will run out just like corn will and as far as I know you can't hold grass like you hold corn.

Technology is always changing. Now there is an idea that they will be able to use the stalk of corn to produce ethanol. My personal opion is that the S.D. government should stop focusing on ethenol so much and switch to wind energy. When it comes to the ethanol plants going up, after some work they can be converted to different tasks without spennding large amounts of money. I don't think that S.D. economy will be hurt as bad as people think.

I agree with Jacob that the economy will not be hurt as much as everyone is concerned. Corn ethanol has been around for years and I do not think the plants will just close. Some of them may but the majority will stay open. There is enough demand for ethanol but we need to focus more on distrubuting it. Most gas stations on the coasts do not carry ethanol. If we developed a more efficient way of transporting like a seperate pipeline from oil we would continue to make money on the corn ethanol and put up the new grass ethanol plants.
