It is the surgical removal of part of the posterior arch of a vertebra. It is used to gain access to the spinal canal. It occurs to make room for the spine.

Laminectory is a prodecure that treats spinal stenosis. Spinal stenosis is a condition when the spinal cord compresses together. In the procedure the vertebrae are cleaned out and widened to put more room in the spinal cord.
